Inspired by the amber necklace Margot Friedländer received from her mother, Auguste, in January 1943.

When Margot's brother Ralph was arrested by the Gestapo, her mother chose to surrender herself so she could remain with her son. Before leaving, Auguste placed her handbag with a neighbor. Inside were her address book and amber necklace.

Margot survived 15 months in hiding, imprisonment in Theresienstadt and the Holocaust. She carried her mother's amber necklace with her and wore it throughout her life,

In her later years, as a public speaker, Margot wore the necklace when giving educational talks as a witness to Nazi persecution and attending official public appearances including her 2022 visit to the European Parliament. Friedländer frequently wore the necklace as a moving tribute to her family
